How Are Camlock Fittings Manufactured?
The essence in the manufacture are the design tolerances specified per the Mil Spec specifications (MIL-C-27487) now superseded by A-A59326. The camlock coupling connection comprises two connecting parts: a coupler part (designated female, with the camlock arms attached) and an adapter part (designated male, with a grooved circumference for receiving the cam lever from the arms of the coupler). The coupler part is cast as a single body. The arms are cast separately. The arms are attached to the coupler at specific points and secured in place using cotter pins, also variously referred to rod pins or simply pins. The adapter part is cast as a single body and has no other parts attached.
Manufacturing Process of Various Camlock Types

1. Aluminum Camlock Fittings
Aluminum camlock fittings possess lightweight and corrosion-resistant properties. There are two primary methods of manufacturing these unique camlock fittings. Either gravity casting or injection molding:
- Gravity Casting

- Investment Casting or Lost Wax Process
- Injection Molding
Gravity casting is a permanent mold casting process in which molten material is poured into a mold shaped like the Camlock. No external pressure is applied. Once cooled and hardened the mold is removed and the fitting machined and finished. It is denser casting that provides durable and strong fittings making them suitable for heavy-duty applications.
This method involves injecting molten aluminium into a mold under high pressure. Suitable for less demanding applications.
2. Stainless Steel Camlock Fittings
Always the best choice if you are looking for highly durable camlock fittings. These couplings are resistant to corrosion, most suitable for marine applications or fluid transfer processes involving liquids with high concentrations of sodium chloride. Quality stainless camlock fittings are manufactured using the investment casting approach.
This process involves creating a wax model of the part and coating this with ceramic material, before placing it in a mold. The wax is melted out leaving behind a hollow ceramic cavity into which molten metal is poured. Investment casting produces precision fittings with a smooth surface finish. The process is used for the manufacture of Brass Camlocks.
3. Polypropylene Camlock Fittings
Polypropylene camlock fittings are known for their durability, lightweight nature, and resistance to various chemicals. They are commonly used in industries such as agriculture, water treatment, and chemical processing. Here is an overview of their manufacturing process through injection molding.
Polypropylene injection molding involves injecting molten polypropylene into a mold under high pressure. This allows the production of fittings with intricate designs and smooth finishes. Polypropylene fittings have lightweight and chemical-resistant properties, which makes them ideal for less demanding applications.
